The Problem with Perfect: How AI Is Changing Photography Expectations
In a world of AI retouching, face filters, and infinite editing tools, the pursuit of perfection in photography has quietly spiraled into something unsustainable. I’ll be the first to admit—I’ve chased it too. I’ve polished, softened, and tweaked beyond what was necessary. But lately, I’ve started asking: What are we losing in the process?
This post is a reflection on the invisible pressure photographers face, the shifting expectations of clients, and the difference between capturing a memory… and reconstructing it. It’s time to talk about what’s real, what’s enough, and why presence—not perfection—has always been the true heart of photography.

Top 6 Most Common Senior Year Regrets (and How to Avoid Them)
Senior year goes by fast
— ask any graduate, and they’ll tell you: one moment you’re attending the first day of school, and the next you’re tossing your cap in the air. In the whirlwind of classes, applications, and final moments, it’s easy to let things slip through the cracks. As a photographer who’s worked with hundreds of seniors (and as a mom who’s been through it three times), I’ve seen some common regrets — and more importantly, how to avoid them.
THE UNIVERSE SENT BIRD POOP…I Sent Gratitude
This week, as I knelt in the garden planting a clematis, I found myself thinking: good things are coming our way, I just know it — you know that quiet sense of hope that blooms in your chest for no particular reason?
And just as I finished that thought, I felt a sudden splash on my forehead and glasses.
A bird had pooped on me.
So naturally, I had to pause and reevaluate my optimism. Was it a sign that good things are coming... or that the universe has a wicked sense of humor?
Either way, the week kept unfolding in its beautifully chaotic way.

A little glamour, a lot of coffee, and even a creepy Mickey Mouse
It’s been a whirlwind of a season here at Alicia’s Photography in Naperville, Illinois — full of creativity, travel, beauty, and behind-the-scenes magic — and I’m so excited to finally share a glimpse of it all with you in this edition of the newsletter.
From our France / Barcelona gallery trip to our unforgettable High School senior model shoot in Paris to the upcoming London Biennale, it’s been a time of growth and momentum (with a little jet lag sprinkled in). Back at the studio, we’ve had a wonderful turnout for our mini session model calls, and I can’t wait to share what’s coming next. I’m also giving you a peek behind the scenes of one of my fine art still life pieces — where inspiration begins, how I build each image, and why heirloom objects carry so much weight in my work.
More Than Just a Pretty Picture
WHY I PHOTOGRAPH THE WAY I DO
It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to write here and wrote a blog post (other than adding my newsletter), — life, business, and beautiful chaos have kept my hands full (and my camera fuller). But lately, I’ve felt a strong pull to return to this space. To reflect. To share. And to reconnect with the why behind the work.
If you’re new here — welcome. I’m Alicia, a portrait photographer based in Naperville, serving the greater Chicago area. I specialize in high school senior portraits, family sessions, professional headshots, and milestone moments that matter. But more than that, I’m here to create something that lasts.
Because for me, photography has never been about just how it looks — it’s about how it feels.
France & A Model Call
Family time in Arles, France was absolutely incredible. From the moment we arrived at the beautiful, historic French home, I knew it was going to be a special time. Spending those quiet days with my husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson was everything a Mom/Mimi could ever ask for. Expect maybe having ALL of my kids there with me. Maybe next year. It was truly a reminder of the importance of slowing down and savoring the moments together.
Now, as we head back home, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with my oldest and youngest, celebrating Father's Day, my mother's birthday, and finally getting my hands back into the garden — it's always such a joy to see how it’s taken shape while I’ve been away.
In this weeks newsletter, I will talk about our trip to the south of France, finding inspiration, our Model Call for little ones, Home Sweet Home Minis, and what I’m loving this week!
We also have a busy week ahead, filled with exciting mini sessions, and I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite things with you in this issue!

Soft Focus Sunday
a note from Alicia Staley Johnson
PHOTOGRAPHY, FINE ART, & LIFE IN BLOOM
As I sit down to write this, the studio is quiet and the morning light is coming through the windows — it’s a calm start to the day, and a good time to share something new with you.
I’ve decided to start this Sunday newsletter as a way to stay in touch, share what’s going on behind the scenes, and let you in on a little more of the heart behind both Alicia’s Photography and Alicia’s Fine Art. Whether we’ve worked together before or you’ve just discovered my work, I’m glad you’re here. My goal is simple: to keep creating beauty, telling meaningful stories, and sharing the journey along the way.
